ABBA, Father: (Mark 14:36)
ABBA, Father: (Mark 14:36) Abba was a deeply personal and affectionate word that most of Jesus contemporaries would have considered disrespectful to use in addressing God.
Affliction
Hardships, calamities and suffering, often lasting a long time. Sometimes imposed by others, sometimes self imposed and at other times divinely imposed.
Anoint
The act of pouring oil on objects or individuals as a symbol of consecration. The name Messiah means the Anointed One.
Baptism
A Christian rite symbolizing cleansing from sin and identification with Jesus. Sprinkling, immersion and pouring are three ways Christians today practice water baptism.
Birthright
In the Old Testament, special rights given to the first born son, including the authority as leader of the family.
Blessing
The gift to give. The joy of having the ability to give.
Blessed
Blessed means highly favored, healthy, wealthy, and joy-filled.
Consecrate
To set aside or dedicate for God’s use (Exodus 13:2)
Convenant
A mutually binding agreement between two parties. In the Old Testament, God entered into a covenant with Israel. But God alone set the conditions to the agreement. In return for their loyalty and obedience, God promised to protect and love Israel and to give them his presence. The new covenant (Heb, 8:7) brought salvation to God’s people through the shedding of Jesus’ blood.
Disciple
A student or follower who adheres to the teachings of a particular teacher or school of thought. In the, New Testament, disciple usually refers to a follower of Jesus.
Divination
Using a human intermediary or inanimate objects, such as the examination of animal entrails, to receive messages from the spirit world.
Educator
An educator is a problem solver. He/She has the ability to create new things, new experiences, and new ideas.
Glory
An essential quality of God’s character (Psalm 63:2), his glory is his worthiness.
GOD, Kingdom of
Gods rule over his people.
Gospel
Good news specifically, the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ, who died for our sins and rose again.
Grace
Unmerited favor, unearned benefit, underserved kindness. God’s amazing gift of forgiveness of sin and power to live with dignity in the present and hope for the future.
HALLELUJAH
Occurring only four times in the New Testament, hallelujah comes from two Hebrew words that mean praise the Lord. (Rev. 19:1)
Intellectual
An intellectual is a problem finder. Intellectuals use the past, but they cannot change the future. They learn a mass of facts but are unable to solve problems.
INTERCEDE
To speak on behalf of or pray for another person, usually to obtain God’s help.
LIFE, ETERNAL
A quality of life that begins.
MANNA
The food God miraculously supplied during the Israelites 40 years of wilderness wandering (the manna stopped at the time of their first Passover in Canaan). Israelites described to appearance as white like coriander seed and its taste as wafers made with honey (Exodus 16:31).
MERCY
Compassion or kindness shown to someone who doesn’t deserve it.
PEACE
The biblical concept of peace has its root the meaning of “totality”, or “completeness.” Important nuances of meaning include such things as fulfillment”, “maturity”, “soundness”, “wholeness”, harmony”, “security”, “well-being”, and “prosperity”. More than a feeling, it connotes a quality of life. Also connotes absence of war and freedom from disturbance.
PROPHECY
The message of a prophet. Also, a spiritual gift empowering one to build up God’s family. Those with this gift either proclaimed newly revealed truth to God’s people or challenged them with existing Scriptural truths (1 Cor. 14 1-5)
PROPHET
A mouthpiece for God, one who receives a message from God and proclaims it to a specific audience.
PROPHETESS
A female prophet (Exodus 15:20)
PURPLE
A symbol of wealth and royalty. The most highly prized dye in the ancient world, purple dye was obtained from various shellfish common to Phoenicia (a name that means land of purple).
redeem
To obtain release by paying a price, to buy back.
REDEEMER
One who delivers from bondage or trouble. Applied to family situations where a kinsman-redeemer was responsible to protect the family (Ruth 3:9). Applied to God as the protector and deliverer of Israel (Isaiah 41:14). Though Jesus is not specifically called “Redeemer” in the New Testament, believers have redemption through his shed blood (Eph. 1:7).
REDEMPTION
Deliverance and freedom- described in the New Testament as freedom from the penalty of sin by payment of a ransom. Through his death on the cross Jesus paid the ransom for our sins (Romans 3:24) and set us free.
REPENT
To consciously turn from sin to God; to be sorry for what you have done and to resolve not to do it again.
Repentance
A profound change of mind from sin centered mess to God-centeredness. Though repentance may represent only regret or remorse over sin, in its fullest sense it connotes a change of one’s orientation in life, involving a deliberate redirection for the future (Acts 26:20).
RESURRECTION
The act of coming back to life after being dead. Described as applying to both the righteous and the wicked (Daniel 12:2). Jesus’ resurrection (Matt 28 :1-10), along with his death, is essential to the salvation of believers (Romans 4:25) and guarantees our resurrection (1 Cor. 5 15:12-19).
REVELATION
The act of disclosure or making known; more particularly, God’s self -unveiling, his deliberate disclosure of true knowledge of himself and his purposes and action on our behalf (Eph. 1:17).
RIGHTEOUSNESS
The fulfillment of the demands of a relationship God brings believers into a right relation with him, erasing their guilt and crediting righteousness to them (Romans 3; 21-22), helping them to be devoted to the service of what God says is right (Romans 6: 11-13).
SACRED
Being connected with God (or the gods) or dedicated to a religious purpose and so deserving veneration.
SACRIFICE
A gift or offering to God (Exodus 12:27). Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice, which satisfies God’s wrath toward humankind (1 John 4:10). Believers are to live in such a way that they offer themselves to God as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1).
SAINTS
Those dedicated to God and set apart for his service (Phil, 1:1). All who believe in Jesus, regardless of their character or spiritual maturity.
SALVATION
Deliverance from danger or death especially deliverance from all that separates people from God (Titus 2:12).
SANCTIFICATION
Act of God by which believers become more and more conformed to Chirst;s image. (1 Thes: 4:3).
SOUL
Represents primarily the life force of the person; also the inner life, encompassing desires and emotions. The immaterial part of a person that does not die. (Rev 6:9).
STRONGHOLD
A place of refuge or defense, such as a tower, fortress or fortified hilltop from which an enemy could be resisted. A metaphor for refuge and security (Psalm 27:1).
TITHE
In biblical context the definition of tithing was a 10% offering that Israel gave from the increase of their crops or animals (Deuteronomy 14:22).
VISION
A supernatural revelation, message or insight communicated through images seen only within a person’s mind or spirit. The pictures seen in a vision may illustrate spiritual truths or future events (Isaiah 1:1).
Vow
A solemn, voluntary promise made to God to perform some action or refrain from some action in return for some hoped for benefits (Judges 11:30-31).
